Growing Our Urban Community's Food Localy
Together we can make the city greener!
Together we can make the city greener!
By utilizing the rooftops and walls of the urban environment for growing organic fruits and vegetables we strive to change the city landscape.
This serves a few very important aspects of city life and improves the health of the citizens and all life forms in and around it:
Permaculture is a form of planning and design that strives to create a more sustainable structure for long term purposes. It relies on working with the existing patterns of the immediate environment, instead of trying to force external structures, thus saving energy in the long term and creating a more stable and self supporting system. The idea of Permaculture was initially used to improve agriculture systems and can very easily be implemented into urban agriculture as well.
Locally grown organic food is more sustainable and better for our environment. It cuts down on transportation costs, helps reduce packaging and chemical use, and serves as a center for organic waist recycling. All these work together to help reduce the carbon footprint of urban life. In addition, an urban farm or community garden also serves as a community center and helps bring people together in a generally estranged urban society :)
